Hellyer. Catherine Cassell, wife of defendant, stated that she had received no support from her husband for three months. She then received 8s. from him. She had to go out washing to support four young children. Her eldest son lived with her up to within seven weeks ago, when he got married. She now sought to get an order from the court to be made against the defendant for the sum of 12s per week. Mr. Hellyer, through the defendant, asked if she would consent to live with her husband of he would promise to support her. She would not consent to this. The defendant swore that he was willing to support his wife, but that she had turned him out, and he had to sleep in the kitchen and also have his meals there, and cook them himself. He then left, and got a signature from Mr Thorne of Castle Hill, and lived in a hut on the orchard. He got 30s. per week or 5s. per day, and was not paid for wet weather. The Bench caused an order to be made for 10s per week and gave a verdict for costs of court and one guinea professional costs. |
