Walter Lawry, free, of the parish of Sydney and Mary Cover Hassall, free of parramatta were married in this church by special licence this 22 day of Nov 1819 by me John Cross officiating minister Walter and Mary signed the register in the presence of Rowland Hassall and Elizabeth Mary Marsden who also signed the register

In 1820 he was responsible for construction of the first Methodist Church in Parramatta at his own cost of £300. The foundation stone is still in its original site near the Leigh Memorial Church, this larger church having been commenced in 1837. The British Missionary Society appointed him to New Zealand then later to Tonga. After several letters of censure he was ordered to Tasmania but instead returned to England in 1825 and continued his ministry there until 1843. He was then appointed General Superintendent in New Zealand. He returned to NSW in 1854 in ill health and lived in "Harborne" in Boundary Street Parramatta until his death. There is a memorial park named in his honour in Buller Street North Parramatta
