MR. JACOB LUMBY.
The ranks of the old pioneers of
the district where thinned last week
end when Mr. Jacob Lumby, of
Sweetman's Creek, passed away,
senile decay being the cause of his
death.
The late Mr. Lumby was 88 years
of age, and was regarded as the
oldest native born man in the dis
trict. He was born on the same
property as where he died, only on
the opposite side of the creek. For
the past thirty odd years he resided
with his son, Mr. Walter Lumby, at
the old home known as the post
office.
The deceased had a wonderful
memory up to the time of his death,
and his stories of the bad old days.
were most interesting. He remem-
bered when the chain gangs worked
on the roads and the hard life they
led. On one occasion, Mr. Lumby
used to relate, as a lad he rolled a
pie melon down to one of the gang.
The overseer caught the man with
the melon and the poor wretch was
flogged for his "awful crime" of
receiving the melon without per-
mission. He remembered all the
bushrangers of olden times, and the
different tribes of aboriginals, who
were numerous in his early child-
hood.
The remains of the worthy old
pioneer were laid to rest in the his-
toric Wollombi cemetery on Sunday
morning, many residents of the dis-
trict attending the funeral.
