"A BLAKENEY SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION.
Mrs. Robert Martin, of Blakeney Hill, received the sad news on Tuesday morning that her son George had been killed in action in France. It occurred on the 10th February accompanying the formal announcement was the following:
"The King commands me to assure you of the true sympathy of his Majesty and the Queen in your sorrow - Kitchener."
Mrs. Martin is over borne with sorrow; deceased, who was only 21 years last September, was her only child, and until the war took him away, had always lived with her. He was a collier, and was last working at Howbeach. He was a fine young fellow at 5ft 10ins., and approaching 14 stone. He enlisted early in August at Lydney into the Second Gloucesters, was sent to Bristol and then on to London. At Christmas time he came home for four days.
The bad news came to Mrs. Martin at a time when her husband had just returned from Gloucester Infirmary, and to which institution he expects to return shortly for an operation, and she deserves and experiences the condolences of her neighbours in her misfortunes."
