In Mar 1856, John took James Pye, an orange grower and the mayor of Parramatta, on a visit to Penant Hills to discuss the cause of the orange blight disease. The return journey began at Bellamy's farm at about noon and they went down Ca stle Hill Road. They came upon some men working on the road near Suttor's farm. John's horse took fright, shied and his gig rolled over throwing him out on his head. Dr. Sutter was called but John had died on the spot near the Cross Road at Baulkham Hills from head injuries. (The Castle Hill Rd referred to is now called Old Northern Road, and the accident occurred near the present junction of Old Northern Road and Windsor Road). He was 60 years old and a 'highly respected citizen' of the district. An inquest was held at Schofield's Horse and Jockey Inn, Baulkham Hills.
